About Us

Hackney Young Peoples University (HYPU)

Hackney Young Peoples University is a registered charity (1112528) and offers a range of free holiday programmes that are open to 11-25 year olds. Young people attending the project have the opportunity to improve their skills, try out new subjects and explore activities, which can help them in their career choices as well as improve their confidence and enable them to access some of the high-quality facilities in Hackney.

The aims of Hackney Young Peoples University (HYPU) are to:

·        Promote independent learning;
·        Raise achievement;
·        Promote racial tolerance and good community relations;
·        Increase access to educational and vocational opportunities through creative partnerships between all sectors - statutory, voluntary, business and industry;
·        Involve young people in the development of HYPU Programmes; and widen participation.

The summer university programme (which is one of our largest projects) began in 1997 as a London Borough of Hackney Initiative placed at Hackney Community College. The Programme was quite small with around 30 courses / activities, but was well received.

For our 2011 summer university  programme we offered 28  activities, had 233 enrolments, 172 attendances and 133 certificates were awarded.  the key success criteria of the project are the number of students attending and the number of certificates they achieve (which represent the number of courses they complete).

It is clear from our evaluation process that students welcome and enjoy our summer programme and look forward to taking part each year.   The main reasons for attending the summer programme is to learn, try new activities make new friends and to increase their level of confidence.

Activities range from Music Production, Dance, Fashion to Hair Dressing, Science and French, which are covered in our 4 core subject areas

  • Arts and Media
  • Vocational and Academic
  • Essential Life  Skills
  • Sports Leisure and Recreation
